Art Meets Ecology In Your Back Yard
Ecology
"We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors,
we borrow it from our children."
                                                   -Native American Proverb

The goal of eco-friendly landscaping is to provide the benefits of
the natural world to those who live here now and to future
generations as well.  Whether it's native plantings or edible ones,
harvesting rainwater or growing organically, Verbena Design and
Landscaping can help you incorporate a variety of sustainable
features into your yard and garden.

Rainwater Harvesting

Preserve water quality by keeping stormwater runoff on your property and out of lakes and
rivers!  Rain barrels, raingardens, buffer plantings and permeable pavements are ways that you
can be part of the pollution solution.  Use less water from the tap, control erosion or solve
drainage problems.  Let the plants do the work by planting a raingarden.
Native Plantings

Many attractive plants available for landscaping
lived in this part of the country before we did.
Native plant species are adapted to our regional
climate and can thrive when other plants need
pampering.  These plants often attract wildlife and
contribute a unique sense of place.  Native prairie
plants are a favorite for raingardens because they
have deep roots that seek out water in times of
drought and are capable of soaking up plenty of
water during rainy times.  This wonderful ability to
absorb, utilize and filter water makes prairie plants
(like Verbena Design's namesake) perfect for use in
any planting designed to infiltrate rainwater.
Edible Landscaping

Imagine picking the freshest produce right in your own yard.
Saving on your food budget doesn't have to be boring with an
abundance of interesting colors and textures available. Fruit trees
can be a great addition to any landscape and Verbena Design can
customize your vegetable and herb garden to include other
beautiful flowers.
Organic Gardening

You don't have to go far to find great fertilizer.
Verbena Design can help you incorporate
natural compost into your landscape.
Whether on site or off, your yard waste can be
recycled.  Managing weeds, insects and
disease doesn't always require the use of
pesticides.  Verbena Design can help you apply
principles of Integrated Pest Management to
maintain your yard naturally.
Sustainable Practices

A sustainable yard can incorporate any or all of the strategies above.  Verbena Design and
Landscaping looks to nature for inspiration and guidance.   Plants are selected for the conditions
of your site and placed where they will thrive.  A well designed and maintained yard and garden
is attuned to the cycles of nature.
